Brittany Murphy and Britney Spears’ Former Hollywood Hills Property Gets Another $1 Million Price Cut

A luxury Hollywood Hills property with ties to two of the biggest entertainment names of the early 2000s has just become $1 million less expensive.

The property at 1895 Rising Glen Road, Los Angeles, California 90069, once owned by both Britney Spears and actress Brittany Murphy, had its asking price reduced from $13.895 million to $12.895 million on August 27, 2026.

The latest reduction is part of a much longer effort to sell the property. It was offered for $16.995 million in March 2025, returned at $15.995 million that August and has undergone several subsequent price changes and relistings. As of August 28, 2026, the property remains listed for $12.895 million.

But its price history may not be the most interesting part of this address.

A property shared by Britney Spears and Brittany Murphy

Long before the contemporary mansion shown in today's listing photos, 1895 Rising Glen Road was associated with Britney Spears.

Brittany Murphy purchased Spears' home in 2003 for approximately $3.85 million. Contemporary Los Angeles Times reporting at the time confirmed that Murphy had purchased Spears' larger residence as she prepared to sell another Hollywood Hills home she owned.

Murphy was already a familiar face to movie audiences, with roles in films including "Clueless," "8 Mile," "Just Married" and "Uptown Girls."

Rising Glen Road would eventually become closely associated with the final years of her life.

What happened at 1895 Rising Glen Road?

On December 20, 2009, emergency responders were called to Murphy's Hollywood Hills residence after the 32-year-old actress became unresponsive.

She was transported from the home to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Los Angeles County coroner later classified her passing as accidental, citing pneumonia complicated by anemia and multiple-drug intoxication.

Five months later, another emergency unfolded at the same property.

Murphy's husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, was found unresponsive at the residence on May 23, 2010. Emergency personnel responded, but Monjack was pronounced dead at the home.

The circumstances surrounding the couple's deaths generated years of speculation and media attention, including theories involving toxic mold. Reporting has noted that authorities did not establish mold as the cause of Murphy's death.

This distinction is especially important when researching the history of 1895 Rising Glen Road.

The striking contemporary residence appearing in today's real estate listing should not be confused with the home occupied by Spears, Murphy and Monjack.

The earlier residence was subsequently demolished, with Realtor.com reporting that it was torn down in 2013 and replaced with an ultramodern mansion. The property therefore carries the same address and location history, but buyers today are looking at a substantially different structure.

The current home is approximately 9,400 square feet and sits on roughly 1.18 acres. The listing describes six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, city and canyon views, and parking for eight vehicles.

That distinction illustrates something that is easy to overlook when researching real estate: a property's history and a building's history are not necessarily the same thing.

The address can have a much longer story than the structure standing on it today.

A $16.995 million listing becomes $12.895 million

The recent pricing history of 1895 Rising Glen Road has been notable on its own.

According to current listing records, the property was offered for $16.995 million in March 2025. It subsequently appeared at $15.995 million, then $14.995 million and $13.895 million before the August 27, 2026 reduction brought the asking price to $12.895 million.

That represents a reduction of more than $4 million from its March 2025 asking price, although the property has been withdrawn and relisted during that period rather than remaining continuously listed under one MLS entry.

Whether the property's unusual history has played any role in its pricing or marketing cannot be determined from the listing information. Luxury real estate prices can be influenced by many factors, including market conditions, seller expectations, architecture, location and demand.

What is clear is that someone viewing the current listing photos alone could easily have no idea just how much history is associated with the address.

Why house history deserves its own research

1895 Rising Glen Road is an unusually high-profile example, but it demonstrates an issue that can apply to virtually any property.

Buyers commonly order a home inspection and appraisal during the purchase process, but those services answer different questions.

A home inspection is primarily intended to evaluate the physical condition of a house and identify issues with components and systems that can be observed.

An appraisal primarily helps determine the property's market value.

Neither is designed to provide a complete historical investigation of an address.

Previous deaths, fires, crimes, former occupants, unusual events and other property-history information may require separate research. Disclosure requirements can also vary significantly depending on the state, the circumstances and how long ago an event occurred.

That means buyers may want to research a property's history before spending hundreds of dollars on inspections and appraisals.

Discovering something that materially changes how you feel about a property early in the process could save both time and money.

The house may change. The address still has a history.

Today, 1895 Rising Glen Road is presented as a modern multimillion-dollar estate with sweeping views and luxury amenities.

More than two decades ago, however, Britney Spears owned the property. Brittany Murphy then purchased it and made it her home. Murphy experienced her final medical emergency there in 2009, and Simon Monjack passed away at the same address five months later.

The original residence is gone.

The property's history is not.
